Collecting pre-owned soccer equipment for youths in economically disadvantaged communities in need in the Philippines...
During summer vacation, I have returned home to the Philippines and conducted youth soccer training sessions in economically disadvantaged communities. My mission in these training sessions is to promote physiological health awareness, engender commitment to academic success and contribute to community development by mentoring youths away from the trappings of the poverty engulfing their communities.
I have had the honor and privilege of working with several grassroots organizations helping youths confront the challenges of poverty through the beautiful game. Below are the descriptions.
There are many such groups in the Philippines who have seen the power of football to uplift disadvantaged communities. If you have pre-owned soccer gear you are looking for a way to discard in a socially conscious manner, then please consider donating them to these communities, who will treat your surplus like a treasure for years and generations to come.

Boys Town is an institution established in 1947 to care for underprivileged, homeless, abandoned, orphaned, or abused children through the age of 17. Since its founding, Boys Town has built a reputation as one of the most successful havens for underprivileged youths, and includes in its list of alumni retired Congressman Gerry Espina Sr., filmmaker Jun Posadas and action-movie star Dante Varona. In 2005, former FIFA Referee Bartolome Tolentino and his wife Anna began a soccer program for the kids at Boys Town, volunteering to train and mentor youths, building character and self-esteem, guiding them towards academic achievement and educational aspiration. Several of their wards have gone on to receive football scholarships at prestigious universities in the Manila area. Coach Anna has recently taken up the mantle of the program since Coach Bart suffered a debilitating stroke. Coach Anna continues to work hard with heroic dedication to fulfill the vision of Bart FC.
The Muntinlupa United Football Club is a non-government organization established in 2005 targeting youths of the community based around the national penitentiary, or the New Bilibid Prison, in Muntinlupa, a southern boro of Metro Manila. The vision of founder and Head Coach Leah Madrid, a career Registered Nurse, was to mentor the children of inmates and prison employees. But since its inception, the MUFC family has grown to include kids from all walks of life, coming together as a community to train on the Department of Corrections football field located just outside the prison grounds. http://www.facebook.com/pages/Muntinlupa-United-Football-Club/123348191019590
FC Leveriza is a grass-roots team of economically disadvantaged youths from the squatter settlements around the Paraiso ng mga Batang Maynila public playground across from the Manila Zoo, or "pleg" as the kids refer to it. Coach Julius and Coach Edong have worked over the years to mentor the kids away from drugs and illicit behavior, developing a footballing culture in the community to address social needs. Through their hard work and unbridled dedication, many of the youths have achieved beyond their dreams, succeeding in school and attaining higher education through college scholarships.
These grass-roots clubs are just three examples who have embraced the power of football to alter lives and develop and sustain a strong community to overcome the cycle of poverty that permeates Philippine society, despite the scarcity of resources.
